So you’ve decided to do a summer reading program with your kids. Right now they’re a little burned out on school and all things related. How to begin? Put yourself in their shoes. What do they love? What do they enjoy? What would they give up screen time for? Plan that. If your kids are young, sticker charts will work just fine to track daily reading. For older kids, have them set a reading goal and then work to achieve it. Reward weekly success with small incentives such as a trip to the local ice cream joint. But be sure to include something really big when the summer goal is met. Something that makes them lean forward and commit to a regular reading schedule with book or page number goals. It doesn’t have to cost a whole lot. How about a family camping trip at the end of summer? Or a bike hike somewhere beautiful and secluded. How about a tour of a ghost town as our family did once upon a time? Or maybe an outdoor family movie night with a big sheet and an old time projector? Whatever you choose to entice your kids to read this summer, make sure it makes them drool with anticipation. And then let the summer reading program begin.
