Summer is here in all its sunny glory. You want to begin a summer reading program, but it seems a bit daunting. Where to begin? It can be as easy as 1,2,3 and I’ll tell you how:

1. Choose a chapter book as a parent read aloud. Parents read out loud to the entire family–one chapter a night. You’ll be surprised how invested the kids become when the story is a really good one and it’s a total family activity. Choose from a good list of classics such as this list of great books.

2. Help each child choose books appropriate for their reading level, making sure there are a few challenges along the way. Now is the time to tackle a book of high interest that’s a tad bit higher than usual. Be available to help with extra-hard words or concepts. Take a bit of time to talk over the content of the book at regular intervals to make sure understanding is in place.

3.  Keep a pile of old favorites available for each reader. These offer pleasant familiarity plus the joy of reading fluently and effortlessly. Reading out loud is good practice for making voices sound just right.

If your kids haven’t been introduced to reading journals, your summer program might be a place to begin. Jot down the titles of books read and any notes or ideas important to the reader. Did he enjoy the book? Would she love to step into a particular story world? Which is the favorite character and why? Add some drawings to make the journal personal and meaningful. Most of all, have fun.

Let the reading begin!
